About Brad

I am an author, journalist, travel writer, and book writing coach with two decades of experience at the highest levels of publishing. My background in editing, writing, and publishing inform my mindful but competitive approach to coaching thought leaders to write and publish books that change the world. I am fueled by my passion for storytelling and turning clients’ big ideas into engaging prose that inspires readers to act, grow, and change. I am a published author (W.W. Norton) and working nonfiction writer. My articles appear in major national magazines.

A former senior editor and contributing editor at Outside and a former contributing editor at George (J.F.K., Jr.’s politics magazine), I worked directly with some of America’s finest nonfiction writers, such as John Krakauer, Chip Brown, and Ian Frazier. I stay apprised of the latest in article and book publishing trends, and I have a broad network of writing and publishing contacts. A part-time yoga teacher and world traveler, I bring a deep understanding of mindfulness, and employ mindfulness and self-compassion tools into coaching my clients. I am an evangelist for a self-compassionate approach to writing and creativity. When our lives are in balance, our true creative selves can emerge and thrive.  My writing has been published in The New York Times Magazine, The New York Times Book Review, National Geographic, GQ, Wired, Yoga Journal, Men’s Journal, Travel + Leisure, Outside, and other publications.

I began my journey to become a knowledgeable book writing coach by working as a senior editor at Outside magazine, where I conceived, developed and edited Jon Krakauer, among other prestigious writers. I gave him and others solid editorial guidance and several of my writers won prestigious nonfiction writing awards based on our work together. But I received so much more from these writers. I learned how to think about stories with sophistication and how to be a professional writer. My next step to becoming a book writing coach was to work as a professional freelance writer. Armed with a deep knowledge of nonfiction storytelling and a desire to travel the world, I left the editing staff at Outside in 1997. I spent more than a decade working as a successful freelance magazine journalist, longform nonfiction writer, and adventure-travel writer. Story assignments took me across America and around the world. I wrote about adventurers, politicians, astronauts, professional athletes, tech and business visionaries, spiritual leaders, and more. I wrote about spiritual gurus in India and Messiahs in Jerusalem. I rode the campaign bus with presidential candidates and broke bread with cult leaders. I played polo with tech billionaires and pounded vodka shots with Russian cosmonauts. I hiked in Jesus’ footsteps in Galilee and road-tripped across occupied Palestine. From these amazing experiences, I took away many lessons about writing and life that serve me today as a professional book writing coach. This life is mysterious, and it’s best to live curiously. My book, Real Mosquitoes Don’t Eat Meat, was published by W.W. Norton. My articles have been published in The New York Times Magazine, GQ, Wired, Yoga Journal, National Geographic Adventure, Men’s Journal, Travel + Leisure, Best American Travel Writing, among others. I had a career that most writers dream about. I won writing awards and my nonfiction writing was anthologized many times. But it wasn’t until my late thirties that I discovered an additional calling: teaching writing and serving as a book writing coach to aspiring authors. I taught nonfiction and memoir writing at The College of Santa Fe, The Santa Fe University of Art and Design, Denver’s Lighthouse Writers Workshop and Boulder’s Colorado Writing School. I have spoken to classes and audiences about writing and storytelling at The University of Colorado-Boulder, The University of New Mexico, Denver University, New Mexico State University, and The Jaipur Literary Festival. Today I am an award-winning book writing coach. I help people write memoir and nonfiction. I specialize in spiritual memoir, travel memoir, business, and big-ideas books by psychotherapists, business people, positive-change-makers, and alternative healers. I also coach people to write book proposals and ghostwrite books and blog posts. When I’m not writing or coaching writers, I teach vinyasa yoga and Yoga of Writing and speak publicly about personal growth, yoga, and travel. You can read all about my personal journey my upcoming books, The Yoga of Writing and Love Dog. I enjoy my work as a book writing coach specializing in nonfiction and memoir. I am dedicated to helping people write the books that are inside them. With more than two decades of experience as a professional writer, editor, teacher, and book writing coach, I am steeped in real-world writing and publishing experience. I’d love to work with you as your book writing coach.

My Philosophy

I believe that we all have an innate talent to tell stories. I believe that we all have stories inside us calling us to tell them. I believe that stories are powerful. Stories can make, define, sink, or free us. These core beliefs about stories run through all my writing and teaching. I believe that telling our stories helps us live with more compassion, courage, impact, connectedness, even love.
My philosophy derives from extensive experience as a journalist, editor, and teacher. I spent more than a decade as a working magazine journalist. I traveled the world on assignment. The experiences I had while reporting stories in Greenland, Palestine, Indonesia, India, the Amazon, and beyond were a gift. It taught me that stories are everywhere and that everybody has a story that is worth telling–and worth listening to.
I’ve also worked as a professional editor. In this role, I’ve mastered the art and craft of storytelling, and I’ve learned this key lesson: stories are more powerful when told well.
Now, I bring the lessons that I learned on the road and behind the desk to bear as a teacher of writing and writing coach. I help people mine their inner stories and get them down on the page. I help them hone their stories into powerful masterpieces. I help people to become published or self-published authors.
